Five offline RPGs that make a commute disappear

October 14, 2026 · Jonas Weber

A good RPG is the fastest way to lose track of a boring commute. The problem is that too many mobile RPGs quietly require a server, and the moment you go underground they freeze. These are the ones that actually survive airplane mode.

Look for turn-based combat if you play in short bursts — you can pause to think and put the phone away without losing a fight. Emberfall Chronicles is our current favourite for exactly this reason, since its missions and story beats pick up cleanly wherever you left off.

Watch out for games that store your save online. If the title offers a local save option, turn it on first thing. It's saved me more than one lost evening of progress.

Finally, battery matters more than graphics on a long trip. The RPGs we keep recommending tend to have clean, stylised art rather than heavy 3D, and that choice pays off when you're far from a charger.
